The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have seen their playoff season end at the hands of the Washington Commanders by a Sunday night score of 23-20 thanks to a last-second Zane Gonzalez doink-in field goal.
It was a game that was defined by two Buccaneers errors: A Baker Mayfield fumble attempting a handoff to Jalen McMillan and a botched snap that cost the offense precious yards. Todd Bowles' team was made to pay both times.
"Dumb mistakes,'' conceded QB Mayfield.
The Buccaneers gave as good as they got, with Mayfield efficient with the football to finish his night's work, going 15 for 18 with 185 yards and two touchdowns, while Bucky Irving looked electric on the ground en route to 77 yards from 17 carries.
Mike Evans tormented rival Marshon Lattimore with 92 yards and a touchdown from seven receptions, but the Commanders defender will get the last laugh as it is his side that advances to the Divisional Round against the Detroit Lions.
Bowles stated earlier in the week that for his team to win, they must not beat themselves and in truth, the game was decided by two Tampa Bay mistakes.
Mayfield's fumble, in which he tried a handoff to McMillan, was one the Commanders recovered and would score a touchdown.
Then, on third-and-inches, a miscommunication between center Graham Barton and Mayfield resulted in a poor snap, and the Buccaneers had to settle for a field goal.
Baker's brutal two-word postgame admission in a video going viral?
The loss "absolutely sucks,'' he said.
All of Tampa Bay's good work this year was undone with those two mistakes, and now the franchise will have to sit on those all offseason, knowing they both played a pivotal role in their downfall.
Mistakes are magnified in playoff football, folks, and the Buccaneers are feeling that right now. And yes is "absolutely'' ... is an awful feeling.
