Bill Belichick gets brutally honest about current state of Philadelphia Eagles

This time last year the Philadelphia Eagles were 4-0.

Now, they're 2-2 as they enter a Week 5 bye.

There's plenty of football left to play but the Eagles are not looking like the contender they're supposed to be this early in the season.

Longtime head coach turned-NFL analyst Bill Belichick shared his thoughts on the current state of the Birds and it's not looking too good.

Bill Belichick gets brutally honest about current state of Philadelphia Eagles

“Look, they’ve lost [eight] of their last [eleven] games," Belichick said. "So, when you sit there and say, ‘Well, they’re one of the best teams in the league,’ I don’t know. Being 3-[8], that’s kind of a stretch if you look at what’s happened recently. But they do have a lot of good players and have a good team. I’m not saying they’re not a good team, I’m just saying they haven’t done very well lately. So, maybe this bye week is a good time for them to reset."

The Eagles have been without No. 1 wide receiver A.J. Brown (hamstring) for three weeks and No. 2 wide receiver DeVonta Smith missed last week's loss due to a concussion.

However, Jalen Hurts still had running back Saquon Barkley and tight end Dallas Goedert at his disposal, but that clearly isn't enough to get this offense going.

“[Saquon] Barkley’s an explosive guy but he can only do so much. We saw that when he was with the Giants,” Belichick said. “Once you put Smith and Brown out there along with [Dallas] Goedert and Barkley, you have one offense. You start taking a couple of those guys out of there, it just becomes a little bit watered down.”

Belichick adds playing "catch up" football is not what the Eagles should be doing and hopes for the Eagles' sake that their key injured players can recover by Week 6 when they take on the Cleveland Browns at home.

"I think this bye week comes at a good time for them, hopefully for them they can get healthy," Belichick said. "Reset a little and get back to playing good Philadelphia Eagle football and that means getting off to a good start and playing from ahead."
