It’s going to be a fun battle for the starting quarterback role in the Denver Broncos, and the early verdict suggests that Bo Nix is winning the race over Zach Wilson and Jarett Stidham. After releasing veteran Russell Wilson in the offseason, head coach Sean Payton wanted to start from square zero, hence the Broncos drafted Nix as the 12th overall in the draft.
Payton rated the Oregon graduate very highly even before he was linked with a move to Mile High. In the OTAs, Nix showed his arm strength and the presence of mind to adapt to Payton’s tactics.
However, the veteran head coach signed Zach Wilson, who fell out of favor with the Jets as added competition. In early June, reports suggested that the Broncos coaches were surprised by Wilson’s adaptability to the new system. He picked up the calls very quickly and for a while was ahead of both Nix and Jarett Stidham, who played the last two games of 2023 after Wilson’s demotion.
Stidham, back in May, said that he refused to let anyone else be the starter ahead of him. However, a recent survey from DraftKings.com suggests that Bo Nix is the big favorite to start as the Broncos quarterback with -400, followed by Wilson, who is the underdog with +450 and Stidham is the outsider with +650.
NFL insider predicts Bo Nix as the Broncos No. 1 quarterback
Before the draft, Nix was projected to be a late first-round or early second-round pick even though he had the most experience at the college level. He played a total of 61 games for the Ducks and the Auburn Tigers.
During that time, he had to learn several different systems which have helped create a unique mentality for the 24-year-old. In a segment of NFL Live, Omar Ruiz, Brian Baldinger, and Tom Pelissero shared high praise for Nix.
The way that he's ingratiated himself into the locker room, the way he's ingratiated himself into that quarterback room, the way Joe Lombardi [OC] says that Nix rarely makes the same mistake twice; and you can feel that experience on the field. Omar Ruiz said
Ruiz further added that nothing seems too big for Nix. The Broncos coaching staff has nothing but appreciation for the rookie quarterback. Nix had a total of 43 wins in college with 1286 completions, more than 15 thousand passing yards with an accuracy of 77.4%, 108 touchdowns, and just 26 interceptions.
