Jake Paul continues to edge closer to his ultimate goal of becoming a legitimate world champion. Bob Arum – who has seen it all in the sport – has weighed in on his chances.
Paul’s record consists largely of former UFC fighters who are naturally smaller and much older. His first test against a legitimate up and coming fighter in Tommy Fury ended in defeat.
Last year’s controversial contest against 58-year-old Mike Tyson proved nothing to fans, but his latest clear points victory over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr did show improvements ability-wise, even if the Mexican barely threw a punch for the first eight rounds.
Prior to that fight, Arum had told Fight Hub TV:
“Jake Paul’s not a boxer.”
The veteran promoter, now 93, said clever matchmaking and spectacle fights are all Paul is interested in, and that he would not be challenging himself.
“Jake Paul is not fighting a real fighter. He’s smarter than you and me combined. It’s not a scam because people know what they’re getting, but he’s not interested in fighting somebody that can really give him a whooping.”
Delving deeper, Arum said the following in a 2021 interview with the MMA Hour:
“I have never seen him fight, I don’t know if he can fight or not fight. I’m inclined to believe that an experienced fighter in his weight class will demolish him because you know, an experienced fighter in any weight class will demolish a young fighter no matter what his amateur pedigree is. I cannot see why that would be different.”
Paul – currently at 14 in the WBA’s cruiserweight rankings – is confident of proving the old guard wrong.
