'Brain Drain' Tipped To Be Buccaneers' Downfall

All offseason, we have heard about the potential pitfalls for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of having a third different offensive coordinator in three years for Baker Mayfield.

Having gone through Dave Canales, Liam Coen, and now onto Josh Grizzard, Baker has shown he can adapt and still play really good football.

But that is a lot of learning the veteran has had to do, and some think that maybe this latest change could be one too many for Mayfield.

And one such person is Fox Sports' Henry McKenna in a what could go wrong take.

"Tampa lost former OC Dave Canales to the Panthers in 2023 and former OC Liam Coen to the Jaguars in 2024," McKenna writes. "So now what does their staff look like? Many of their top offensive minds are moving into roles they’ve never had before. And if they’re not ready, Mayfield could suffer from it."

The concerns are valid.

However, we should point out that of all the coordinator changes Baker has gone through in Tampa, this looms as the one that could affect him the least.

Why? Grizzard was the passing game coordinator under Coen last year, so the system Grizzard is using is reportedly roughly the same, with his own wrinkles thrown in.

So the "change" might not be as drastic as some think.

Still, there will be things Mayfield has to learn, but given how he has handled the past two coordinator changes, we don't think it will set him back and make him regress like many are waiting for.
