ESPN reporter Jeremy Fowler tweeted out that Ravens' safety Marcus Williams is preparing to head into free agency and is expected to be released by the Ravens soon. The former second-round pick spent the last three seasons where he recorded five interceptions, 149 tackles, and 18 pass deflections in that time.
Williams dealt with some injury issues his first two years that kept him out of 13 regular-season games. He finally got back healthy this year but was benched after struggling early in the season.
Williams, who was once an elite NFL safety, is ready for a fresh start, and at 28, he still has a lot left in the tank to give. The former Utah Ute is excellent at reading the quarterbacks' eyes, making plays on the ball, and he is an excellent tackler.
The Broncos should try to make an offer for Williams in free agency. Williams is a free safety, and that is exactly what the Broncos could use to make their secondary better.
Strong satiety Brandon Jones had a lot of success in his first year with the Broncos, but free safety P.J. Locke struggled a lot as a starter and will most likely not be starting again next year for the Broncos.
Williams could come in and be an immediate ball hawk and playmaker for the Broncos with his skills and experience. Williams is the same age as Locke and would be the oldest starter in the secondary for the Broncos if signed.
Williams has been on multiple playoff teams and knows what it takes to reach greatness individually and as a team. Williams could come in as a leader and mentor for the Broncos' young secondary. He would be an excellent complement to Patrick Surtain II and Riley Moss.
Williams and the Broncos could be a perfect match, and Vance Joseph would love to have a new playmaker at the top of his defense.
