The Denver Broncos and Sean Payton have gradually assembled a roster featuring a healthy mix of young and veteran talent. One of the core pieces to that group is 29-year-old wide receiver Courtland Sutton, who is entering into the final year of his contract.
The 6'4", 216 lb wideout is coming off of his first thousand-yard season since 2019, with a career-high 135 targets coming by way of rookie quarterback Bo Nix.
According to Jared Dubin of CBS Sports, Sutton's connection with the now second-year QB is a big reason why the Broncos need to pay up and extend him.
"He's clearly Bo Nix's No. 1 target and it sure seems like having that kind of threat around during the early portion of your young quarterback's career is quite important," Dubin writes.
If Sutton really is that valuable to Nix, and in turn Denver, it begs the question: What kind of deal can the wideout expect to get from the Broncos?
"While he's unlikely to be paid near the top of the market, he could be in line for a significant pay bump that keeps him around through the end of Nix's rookie-scale deal," Dubin writes.
That should be encouraging for Broncos fans, who have become accustomed to Sutton's ability to win jump balls and make catches in crucial situations.
Now the wait-and-see game begins: Is Sutton offered a deal before the season starts? Or does the team watch how he performs in the final year of his contract to decide?
