The NFL Scouting Combine is one of the first ways for all 32 teams to meet and evaluate the draft prospects, but it isn’t the only time.
Sometimes, a player might not have a good workout in the combine, but that doesn’t mean they are off on a team’s radar.
Oregon quarterback Bo Nix struggled in the 2024 NFL Scouting Combine, leaving the Denver Broncos not sold on him.
On Sunday, Broncos head coach Sean Payton was asked by NFL Network’s Peter Schrager about Nix being their quarterback target at the time.
“We didn’t at the time. I would say that decision probably was finalized, or we felt real strong, wasn’t just the Pro Day on Friday and Saturday we had a private workout. Saturday after his private workout, we felt like that was our target. At this point in time, he didn’t throw well.”
Nix was battling to be one of the top quarterbacks selected in the 2024 NFL Draft. He had many years of experience at the collegiate level, but he wasn’t as polished as Caleb Williams, Jayden Daniels, or Drake Maye.
Nix threw passes in the Combine on March 2 and had mixed reviews. 10 days later, Mar. 12, Nix worked out on Oregon’s Pro Day and had a workout for the Broncos the following day.
He would be the sixth and final quarterback selected in the first round from Denver with pick No. 12. Even after a tough combine performance, the Broncos kept their minds open to Nix, and he is their franchise quarterback.
The Broncos could be looking at any prospect coming out of the 2025 NFL Scouting Combine. Last year, they needed a quarterback. This off-season, they need a “joker,” a steady offensive line, and more weapons for Nix.
