Broncos’ Sean Payton Reveals Plan to Support Bo Nix by Training Camp

Heading into the 2025 offseason, one of the Denver Broncos' highest priorities was adding talent surrounding Bo Nix. A year after his breakout rookie season, Nix needs more help on the offensive side of the ball. A lot of focus has been on the tight end and running back needs, but Broncos head coach Sean Payton plans to add at another position by the time of training camp.

Broncos’ Sean Payton Reveals Plan to Support Bo Nix by Training Camp

During the Broncos' pre-draft press conference with head coach Payton and general manager George Paton, the topic of adding to the wide receiver room came up. Payton's response shed light on the Broncos' plans for the wide receiver position.

"We're going to add numbers to that position [WR] when you look at what we take to training camp, whether that's through the draft or free agency. But I would say, we're happy with who we selected a year ago, the one we selected two years ago, and the guys that are already here."

Courtland Sutton has been in Denver the longest, and his spot is secure, especially with contract extension talks going in the right direction. Meanwhile, Marvin Mims, entering his third season in the NFL, will likely see a more significant role as he continues to develop.

The other two most notable names are second-year players Troy Franklin and Devaughn Vele. Franklin was selected in the fourth round at pick 102, and Vele was picked in round seven at pick 235 during the 2024 NFL Draft.

In 2024, Vele had 41 receptions for 475 yards and three touchdowns. Franklin, meanwhile, had 28 receptions for 263 yards and two touchdowns. Mims had 39 receptions for 503 yards and six touchdowns, while Sutton had 81 receptions for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns.

The Broncos' wide receiver room is very unique in the NFL. While Sutton is a clear number one, the rest of the wide receiver room isn't in a descending hierarchy. It's a group effort between Mims, Franklin, and Vele.

While the overall unit has been impressive, the Broncos appear poised to add more depth at the very least heading into training camp. Lil'Jordan Humphrey and Josh Reynolds are no longer Broncos, and both were solid depth pieces for the offense.

Adding another wide receiver or two, whether it's through the NFL Draft or free agency, seems to be a priority for the Broncos as the draft approaches. Wherever the wide receiver is added from, the Broncos plan to give more weapons to Bo Nix in his Sophomore season.
