Browns Not Interested In Absorbing Kirk Cousins' Current Contract

Reports have indicated that the Cleveland Browns are not interested in absorbing any of Kirk Cousins' contract.

According to D. Orlando Ledbetter, Cousins is "asking to be cut loose." Ledbetter reported the update to Cleveland's 92.3 "The Fan", explaining that the Falcons would be expected to eat the majority of what's left on Cousins' $180 million contract to facilitate any trade. That, of course, would be pending Cousins' own approval of a move to Cleveland, considering the veteran has a no-trade clause in his deal.

Browns Not Interested In Absorbing Kirk Cousins' Current Contract

Cleveland has been a rumored landing spot for Cousins recently, as he was spotted at a few establishments around town. Although Atlanta has stated that it plans to keep Cousins on the roster as a high-paid backup, it now appears that the team will consider any and every offer.

Finding a trade partner willing to take on any portion of Cousins' contract may be contingent upon a team's desperation to sign a quarterback after a possible injury during camp. As Ledbetter also stated, most teams view the Falcons quarterback as "untradeable." Meaning, unless Cousins were to give a portion back to Atlanta, or completely rework his deal, a trade is highly unlikely anytime soon.

The contract that Cousins signed may now come with some regret, unless he is willing to stay on the roster throughout the season as a very wealthy backup quarterback. Besides that, his only option may be those as mentioned earlier, one of gambling on a team that desperately needs the services of a veteran QB after the draft, or in the summer months of NFL Training Camp. As for now, the Cleveland Browns are off the table.
