Browns Sign QB Tyler Huntley After Releasing Depth Chart

Who is Tyler Huntley the former Pro-Bowl quarterback starting for Dolphins in Week 4 against Titans? - AS USA

The Cleveland Browns are adding another passer to their quarterback room, reuniting with Tyler “Snoop” Huntley ahead of the team’s first preseason game.

Huntley spent last preseason with the Browns, competing for the backup role to Deshaun Watson. Huntley made it through the first wave of roster cuts but was let go before Week 1 when Cleveland was unable to find a trade partner.

After being released by the Browns, Huntley — who made the Pro Bowl in 2022 — caught on with Miami Dolphins. He started five games with Tua Tagovailoa sidelined. Huntley completed 64.7% of his passes for 829 yards, three touchdowns and three interceptions.

The Browns already have four quarterbacks vying for the starting spot: Joe Flacco, Kenny Pickett, Shedeur Sanders and Dillon Gabriel. Cleveland released its first unofficial depth chart on Monday, which penciled in Flacco as the starter, followed by Pickett and Gabriel. Sanders — the most high-profile fifth-round pick in recent memory — is at the bottom as the No. 4 quarterback.

Browns Working Through QB Injuries

Adam Schefter of ESPN first reported the signing of Huntley. It’s uncertain where he will slot into the competition and distribution of reps.

“Browns are signing QB Tyler “Snoop” Huntley, who spent part of last season with Cleveland,” Schefter said. “With Kenny Pickett and Dillon Gabriel nursing hamstring injuries, and Shedeur Sanders having a sore shoulder, the Browns need another arm. Enter Huntley.”

The Browns face the Carolina Panthers on Friday in their first preseason tilt. They’ll also have a joint practice with the Panthers this week.

Flacco, 40, is unlikely to see much — if any — action during the preseason. If Pickett and Gabriel continue to be limited, it could open the door for Huntley to get some work.

Despite the injuries in the quarterback room, Daniel Oyefusi of ESPN reported that no setbacks were suffered during Monday’s practice.

There was no setback with any of the Browns QB injuries from today’s practice, I’m told. With the team heading to Charlotte for joint practices, the mindset is to be proactive and make sure to have enough QBs for the preseason opener given the current injuries in the room.

Browns QB Shedeur Sanders Hoping for ‘Reps’ in First Preseason Action

Sanders dealt with shoulder soreness over the weekend but returned to action during Monday’s practice and was a full-go.

The fifth-round pick is looking forward to getting in some work during the first preseason game, although he said that he hasn’t been informed about how the snaps will be distributed.

“Reps, I think that’s pretty much it—just reps,” Sanders said of his hopes for the first preseason game. “I think every rep I get in general is valuable. You know, we definitely taking things up a notch with everything. Every rep, anytime I step on the field, I take it like it could be my last. Because you don’t know. There are players that we were just practicing with last week, that’s not here no more. So, like I said, it’s more about a bond. It’s more about going all out.”

Even with Huntley on the roster, the Browns are likely to test both Gabriel and Sanders in their preseason opener. Ownership in Cleveland was adamant that the team needs to know what they have in their rookies before looking towards the future.
