Buccaneers avoid a big injury scare with Baker Mayfield that caused him to miss the latest training camp practice

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are already dealing with some tough injury problems in training camp and now, the team has to add star quarterback Baker Mayfield to the list.

Per NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Mayfield sat out Friday's practice because he suffered a contusion on his throwing hand the day before. He went ahead and had it scanned just to be safe and the results came back negative - he's considered day-to-day, per Pelissero.

The Bucs certainly avoided an injury scare with Mayfield and it makes all the sense in the world for them to be cautious moving forward.

#Bucs QB Baker Mayfield won’t practice today after suffering a contusion on his throwing hand Thursday, per source.

Mayfield underwent scans as a precaution and ruled out a more significant injury. He’s day to day.

The biggest goal of any NFL training camp is to come out of the mix as healthy as possible and so far, that hasn't been the exact case for the Bucs.

Tristan Wirfs and Chris Godwin are on PUP and starting tight end Cade Otton has missed several practices, now, with an undisclosed injury. Star linebacker Lavonte David is dealing with "soreness" as Todd Bowles described it on Thursday and rookie EDGE David Walker tore his ACL a week ago and is out for the season. Backup linebacker Anthony Walker, a guy who is expected to play an important depth role, is still on the NFI list, as well.

Fortunately, it doesn't sound like this is a serious issue for Mayfield. We'll obviously monitor this and provide any more updates that come down the pipe. Fifth-year quarterback Kyle Trask and UDFA rookie Connor Bazelak will take the reps in his stead, as Michael Pratt remains on the PUP with a lower back injury.
