Buccaneers Secure Backup Quarterback Behind Baker Mayfield

After a busy 24-hour period on Wednesday that saw a number of free agent signings for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and general manager Jason Licht, the team secured an important offensive roster spot.

Backup quarterback Kyle Trask was signed to a one-year, $2.787 million deal per NFL Media's Ian Rapoport.

The 27-year-old was a second-round pick of the Buccaneers in 2021 out of the University of Florida to back up then-quarterback Tom Brady.

The hope was that Trask could take over as the starter after Brady retired after the 2022 season, but the former Gator never impressed coaches and the Bucs had to find a veteran instead. That, of course, was Baker Mayfield, who has worked out nicely.

Trask has appeared in seven games over four seasons but has never started. In 32 snaps, Trask is 4-for-11 for 28 yards.

The only other quarterback under contract behind Mayfield and Trask is Michael Pratt, who was drafted by the Green Bay Packers in the seventh round in 2024.

The Packers waived Pratt during final roster cuts last offseason and he was picked up by the Bucs and has been on the practice squad most of last season.
