Buccaneers Wirfs Talks Coen’s ‘Crazy’ Departure

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have officially closed the chapter on the Liam Coen era, as Coen has departed to become the head coach in Jacksonville.

The Liam Coen saga was marred by a messy back-and-forth, with reports emerging that he secretly met with the Jaguars in Jacksonville before ultimately leaving the Buccaneers to become their new head coach.

Buccaneers Wirfs Talks Coen’s ‘Crazy’ Departure

With Liam Coen’s departure, Josh Grizzard has been promoted to offensive coordinator for the Buccaneers, building on his experience as passing game coordinator under Coen last season.

While the Buccaneers’ players have been relatively quiet about Liam Coen’s departure, tackle Tristan Wirfs has now shared his thoughts. In an interview with Ari Meirov on NFL Spotlight, Wirfs opened up about how he navigated the drama surrounding Coen’s initial decision to stay, only to later change his mind and join the Jaguars.

“It was kind of crazy,” Wirfs stated. “The whole O-line was together, we went on a trip, we saw he was back with the Bucs, then we saw no, he was in Jacksonville, and then they tried to block something. It was a whirlwind. It’s a business, you don’t know when an opportunity like that to go live your dream and become a head coach is going to come around, we understood. It was crazy, but we wish him success.”

As a result, Baker Mayfield will now work with his third offensive coordinator in as many years with the Buccaneers. Meanwhile, the Buccaneers are counting on new OC Josh Grizzard to build on last season’s momentum and take the offense to the next level.

With his familiarity with the offense from last season, Josh Grizzard has a distinct advantage as he takes the reins. Now, he’s at the helm, steering the ship forward.

The Buccaneers endured a tumultuous few days with Liam Coen’s sudden departure, but the franchise has quickly turned the page. With Grizzard on board, the focus shifts to the future, and the team is moving forward with renewed momentum.
