Tampa Bay Buccaneers wide receiver Mike Evans has long been the face of the franchise, serving as the team’s top offensive threat since being selected seventh overall in the 2014 NFL Draft out of Texas A&M.
As the inaugural draft pick of the Jason Licht era in Tampa Bay, Evans has been a cornerstone of the franchise. He is currently playing out the final year of his two-year, $52 million contract extension, which he signed prior to last season.
Despite being in the final year of his contract, Evans remains invested in the Buccaneers’ success and has opinions on how to enhance the team.
The recent news of Myles Garrett’s trade request from the Cleveland Browns sent shockwaves throughout the NFL. As one of the league’s premier defensive players, Garrett’s desire for a change of scenery is particularly noteworthy given his relatively young age of 29, which suggests he’s still in his prime.
During a recent appearance on the Loose Cannons podcast, Evans shared his thoughts on the Buccaneers’ current state. Notably, he expressed enthusiasm for the idea of general manager Jason Licht trading for Cleveland Browns defensive end Myles Garrett.
As it happens, Evans and Garrett share a common bond as former Texas A&M Aggies, although they never overlapped in College Station. Evans suited up for the Aggies from 2011 to 2013, while Garrett played from 2014 to 2016.
Evans thinks Garrett would look great in the Pewter and Red.
“[Garrett will] look great in Bucs red, too,” Evans stated. “We’ll take Myles. I’m talking about the starting five, but that, too.”
The BR Rub
Evans isn’t wrong here. The team desperately needs a legitimate pass rusher. Garrett would provide that and more. The issue here is cost. Not just the price-tag of Garrett’s contract but the draft capital it would take to trade for him.
That said, Garrett is better than any prospect in this years draft, and it isn’t close. So if Jason Licht and company can make it work, then this needs to happen.
