Bucs Camp Gets National Attention After NFL Columnist Goes on Tweetstorm

Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp got a lot of national attention on July 28, but it was all the good kind, as CBS Sports NFL columnist Pete Prisco went on a tweetstorm raving about the Bucs and how they look this summer.

As you’d imagine, Prisco was in attendance at Bucs Camp on Monday, and he liked what he saw in person.

“Bucs observations from a day at camp,” he began the first of several X posts on the evening of July 28. “Their rookie class will be special. [Emeka] Egbuka is the real deal, Benjamin Morrison and Jacob Parrish are getting rave reviews, and could start. Tez Johnson will be [the] return man. David Walker’s injury hurts. But Jason Licht has another good class.”

Tampa Bay Buccaneers training camp hype.

“Word is Calijah Kancey has been unblockable at times,” Prisco continued. “He will have his breakout season if he’s healthy. Like a dominant inside player who will push for All-Pro honors.”

Adding: “Bucky Irving told me he can handle a big workload, but I think the Bucs might limit him some because of his size to keep him fresh.”

On new offensive coordinator Josh Grizzard, Prisco noted that while he has “never called plays” before, “Todd Bowles has made it a point to let [Grizzard] do a lot of it in the offseason work, [and] Baker Mayfield likes what he sees so far. That offense, when [Tristan] Wirfs and Chris Godwin are back, can be special.”

Prisco also called tight end Devin Culp a “deep sleeper” in 2025 after watching him play on Monday.

On the defensive side, he highlighted linebacker SirVocea Dennis, who is now healthy, and converted safety Tykee Smith playing alongside Antoine Winfield Jr. “The secondary, if the rookies start, can really run,” Prisco concluded.

Prisco Believes Buccaneers Can Push for ‘A Lot More’ Than an NFC South Title, Ex-Bucs Star Agrees

There was one final post from Prisco, as he went full-on Bucs hype man mode on social media.

“The Bucs give off the impression that they know they are good,” he relayed. “That’s usually a good sign. I think they can push for a lot more than a division title.”

Ironically, several hours earlier on the same day, ex-Buccaneers star defensive tackle Gerald McCoy eyed the upcoming Philadelphia Eagles matchup and a championship mentality on social media.

“Hey @NFL,” McCoy wrote. “I know Sept 28th is too early to flex games but a 1 o’clock kick off for Eagles at Bucs shoulda been prime time. I’ve been to both camps and I’m telling you this will [be] one of the games of the year.”

Hey @NFL I know Sept 28th is too early to flex games but a 1 o’clock kick off for Eagles at Bucs shoulda been prime time. I’ve been to both camps and I’m telling you this will one of the games of the year. Eagles thinking like, carrying themselves and practicing like they are…

“Eagles thinking like, carrying themselves and practicing like they are champs,” the former NFL star explained. “They are not satisfied. Speaking to Jalen [Hurts] and Lane [Johnson], they are true professionals and on a mission.”

“The Bucs have a point to prove,” he continued, getting to Tampa Bay. “If you want to be the Champs you have to beat the Champs and after speaking to Baker he understands it’s gonna take the little things to take that next step.”

“Lavonte [David] and Mike [Evans] are champs who want to be champs again,” McCoy finally concluded the post. “That will be a clash of 2 juggernauts. And I CANT WAIT!! 😮‍💨😮‍💨😮‍💨”

It seems the Bucs are getting a lot of attention heading into 2025.

Bucs Camp Will Not Determine If Tampa Bay Is a Super Bowl Contender Again

While all this Buccaneers praise is nice to see, it doesn’t guarantee anything. And neither does anything that happens at Bucs Camp.

Training camp is a great time for NFL teams to see what they have in younger players as they shape their 53-man roster, but the true test begins in Week 1.

Until then, all this Bucs hype is just that, hype. It’s the coaches and the players’ jobs to keep a level head going into the regular season.
