The Tampa Bay Buccaneers' offense last season was one of the best in football as Baker Mayfield, Mike Evans, Jalen McMillan, and Bucky Irving did most of the heavy lifting.
After Chris Godwin's season ended after Week 7 due to injury, the rest of the offensive cast stepped up and helped the Buccaneers to a 10-7 record, a division title, and another playoff appearance.
But with Godwin getting older and Mike Evans surely slowing down soon, the Buccaneers at the receiver position might need to get a little younger.
For Pro Football Focus, the Bucs select TCU receiver Savion Williams in their "skill position" mock draft.
"Williams is a physically gifted athlete who was a dual-threat weapon in college. The best-case scenario is that Williams sits for two or three seasons and develops into a long-term X receiver, as he did post an impressive 88th percentile separation rate (84.3%) last year," Pro Football Focus writes. "If not, he can at least be used as a gadget and special teams player, adding another element to the Buccaneers’ already dangerous offense."
Taking a "future view''? That mighr be a bit unusual. But ...
Having a year or two to learn from Godwin and Evans is perhaps the right environment for a receiver who is still a little rough around the edges.
Standing at 6’ 4’’, Williams, like Evans, could be a matchup nightmare when on the field as his physicality, speed and strength all lend him to being a tough matchup for opposing defenses.
NFL.com's Lance Zierlein's scouting report on Williams sees him as a potential hit or miss prospect.
"The difference between “siren song” or “pot of gold” could rest in Williams’ technical development and the creativity of his play-caller," Zierlein writes.
It appears there is enough to work with for Williams, and sitting behind Godwin and Evans might just be the next thing for him as he develops, because in truth, you can't ask for a better duo to teach you the ropes.
