The Tampa Bay Buccaneers run game has been one of the better ones in football through 13 weeks, ranking eighth for yards per game (137.2), and a big reason for that has been the play of rookie Bucky Irving.
Fresh off a monster 152-yard game in the 26-23 overtime win over the Carolina Panthers, Irving has continued to show what the Buccaneers have gotten a steal in the fourth round.
Now over 1,000 yards from scrimmage (723 rushing, 285 receiving), Bucky is on track to have a seriously good rookie season as the main instigator of the Buccaneers' stout run game.
Receiver Mike Evans, who has seen a lot in his time in football, knows that Tampa Bay has a special talent on its hands.
“He's an elite player, " said Evans, offering his scouting report. "He was very polished coming in, great vision, he has all the tools that you want in the running back, tough, durable, quick, he just makes plays."
Coming into the season, Irving was Rachaad White's backup, but now the roles are flipped, with Bucky having 30 more rushing attempts and 313 more yards than White.
The pecking order has now been established.
However, one thing that offensive coordinator Liam Coen has done is that it isn't a one-man show with Irving; he mixes in White and even Sean Tucker, giving defenses problems with a three-headed monster out of the backfield.
However, Irving has shown over the last three weeks (73, 88, and 152 rush yards) that he deserves the lion's share of touches, and this appears to be the case moving forward.
