The Tampa Bay Buccaneers were the first team to cut its roster down to 53 players, making it happen nearly a full day before the 4 p.m. ET deadline on August 27.
One of the moves made involved placing veteran running back Chase Edmonds and second-year wide receiver Rakim Jarret on IR. The difference between the two, however, is Edmonds' season is over, as he was placed on season-ending IR. Jarrett was placed on short-term IR and will miss the first four games of the year, at minimum. Neither player will count toward the Bucs' roster. Jarrett will count, but only once he's cleared and activated.
It's a tough blow for Edmonds, who had looked pretty good before getting injured during one of the first few days of camp. The Bucs never divulged his injury and repeatedly cited his status as "day-to-day", which clearly wasn't the case. Todd Bowles did nothing wrong, just to be clear. Teams don't have to give out injury information, of any sort, during the offseason and that's what he was doing.
Up until this point, it's still unclear what Edmonds' injury is. As part of the result, second-year back, Sean Tucker, and rookie running back, Bucky Irving both made the Bucs' 53-man roster, along with incumbent starter Rachaad White. That's not taking anything away from either player - they both did more than their fair share to earn a spot, regardless of Edmonds' health.
Edmonds also missed four games in Tampa, last year, and hasn't played a complete season since 2020, when he appeared in all 16 games for the Arizona Cardinals. For his career, he's logged 450 carries that gained 1,970 rushing yards and 11 rushing touchdowns, good for an average of 4.4 yards per carry. He's also amassed 158 receptions for 1,159 receiving yards and six receiving touchdowns on 205 targets. He signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal with the Bucs on March 11, so he'll be a free agent, next year.
