The Kansas City Chiefs added a veteran offensive lineman on Tuesday, announcing the addition of free-agent offensive tackle D.J. Humphries.
Humphries, a former first-round draft pick for the Arizona Cardinals in 2015, took the field for eight seasons as a starter. His strong play at the left tackle position earned him a Pro-Bowl selection in 2021.
Humphries, 30, tore his ACL late in his 2023 campaign with the Cardinals. He's yet to take the field for a single snap in 2024.
Chiefs offensive coordinator Matt Nagy played with Humphries' father in the Arena League. When asked what he expects from Humphries through the rest of the 2024 season, Nagy gave a simple answer.
"To play the way that he's been playing his entire career," Nagy said.
"With any player that comes off an injury or that comes to a new team on top of that, it's going to take some time," Nagy continued. "And I think you want to make sure that you're making the best judgment for not just the team but for the player too so they can excel.
"He's excited to get in here and just kind of learn what we do and how we do things and be a part of it... He's experienced so he wants to be able to help out in any way possible, but there'll be some time involved."
The Chiefs have struggled at the left tackle position throughout the 2024 season, splitting time between second-year lineman Wanya Morris and rookie tackle Kingsley Suamataia.
Despite the team's shaky left tackle play, the Chiefs are 10-1 in the 2024 season. Patrick Mahomes and his squad dropped their first loss of the year in a Week 11 defeat at the hands of the Buffalo Bills.
On Friday afternoon, the Chiefs will face off against the division-rival Las Vegas Raiders.
