In the last few years, the Kansas City Chiefs haven't had the success in the return game that they might have liked. I'm sure special teams coordinator Dave Toub would love for that area to be better, and on Sunday, there is a possibility we could see a change up, which could help take that part of the game to the next level.
Toub is one of the best special teams coordinators in the entire league. The unit hasn't played like that, but, historically, Toub has great special teams units. This year, it hasn't been terrible, but it hasn't been quite up to par. Then again, they have had so many injuries that it's hard to have continuity. Just think, special teams are very important -- it saved a few Super Bowl wins, specifically against the Philadelphia Eagles a few years ago.
The Chiefs want that kind of help back from special teams, and with injuries happening, they could get it.
Mecole Hardman has primarily been a returner this season. He hasn't been great as a receiver, but as a returner, he has been serviceable. But, he's been banged up and been limited pretty much all week. So, what would the Chiefs do in that situation?
Well, they are kind of already preparing for something like that.
"Xavier [Worthy] was ready to roll, you know, and he was excited about it. And, you know, a couple of times I might have two shots there where, you know, we were getting ready for punt return, and then they got the first down, yeah. So, you know, he was excited for the opportunity. Pretty tough guy," Toub said on Thursday.
Because of his speed, getting Worthy on punt returner could do wonders for this unit. With his speed, he can make something out of nothing and completely flip a game on its head. Remember now that this is the fastest player to ever run at the NFL Combine.
So, while I do semi-like the idea, there is one thing that concerns me. The Chiefs are already having injuries in their wide receiver room, so putting a smaller guy like Worthy in a position to get injured more frequently than the one he's already in, may not be smart.
The Chiefs may try it to see how it goes, but either way, it's good to know they are willing to do whatever it takes. The Chiefs play the Denver Broncos on Sunday, and then the Buffalo Bills, Carolina Panthers, and the Las Vegas Raiders again
