The Kansas City Chiefs are well-rested, and perhaps none more than quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who, by the time he takes the field against the Houston Texans in the Divisional Round, will be playing his first game in over three weeks.
Having started in the 29-10 rout of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Mahomes then sat out the 38-0 loss to the Denver Broncos and now has enjoyed another week off with the first round of the playoffs coming and going.
That is a long time without playing meaningful football, and the three-time Super Bowl winner detailed how he has approached that time off.
“Nothing that I would not normally do," Mahomes said of his preparation. "Just continue to work in the building working at practice like I usually do, obviously the reps are a little bit different but at the same time, you can get mental reps, and you can get physical reps on the side. So continue to work with those guys that weren't playing that last Denver game, and then preparing your body to go out there and execute in the playoffs.”
Given the amount of time off, the fear of the Chiefs starting slowly against the Texans is a real concern, but this is Mahomes' first rodeo. He and most of the roster have been here before, so it will be nothing new.
Ah, but there was one "new'' situation ... with a newborn, as Baby Daddy Patrick and Brittany welcomed into the world this week a little girl, "Golden Raye.''
But about football? Needing the rest to get several players fully healthy, Kansas City appears to be in great shape ahead of its first playoff game, as the benefits of clinching the No. 1 seed are rather clear.
But now they must take advantage of it and put the Texans to the sword at Arrowhead and march on to yet another AFC Championship game under Mahomes' guidance.
