Chiefs’ Patrick Mahomes makes 100th start Sunday. Here are 15 NFL records he holds

Time has a funny way of sneaking up on you.

It seems like it wasn’t that long ago that Patrick Mahomes became the Chiefs’ starting quarterback, but we are on the cusp of witnessing his 100th career regular-season start.

That will come Sunday when the Chiefs play the Chargers at SoFi Stadium.

Mahomes, who turned 29 last week, is now in his seventh season as the Chiefs’ starter and eighth overall in the NFL. The Chiefs have a 77-22 record in his previous starts during the regular season (.778). Surely, not all of those wins came courtesy of NFL officials, right?

As Mahomes prepares to make start No. 100 on Sunday, here is a look at 15 of the NFL records he already has set.

  • Mahomes’ 77 victories are the most wins by a QB in their first 100 starts (Tom Brady and Roger Staubach are second with 76)
  • Mahomes needed just 40 career games to reach 100 touchdown passes. Former Dolphins star Dan Marino held the old record of 44 games
  • Mahomes threw for 200 touchdown passes faster than anyone in NFL history. He did it in 84 games. Marino reached that mark in 89 games
  • Even though he will play his milestone game Sunday against the Chargers, Mahomes already has most passing yards (29,083), touchdown passes (224) and pass completions (2,450) of any quarterback in NFL history in their first 100 starts. Mahomes eclipsed records held by Aaron Rodgers (27,520 passing yards and 222 TD throws) and Kurt Warner (2,241 completions)
  • Mahomes is the youngest player ever to win both a league MVP and a Super Bowl title
  • Mahomes reached 25,000 passing yards in a mere 83 games, the fastest in NFL history. He also was the fastest to 15,000 career passing yards and 20,000 career passing yards. The latter came in 67 games. Matthew Stafford held the old mark of 71 games
  • Mahomes opened the 2019 season with 1,831 passing yards with no interceptions in the first five games. That topped a record held by Peyton Manning (1,744 passing yards in 2013) for the most passing yards without an interception to begin a season in NFL history
  • Mahomes’ 105.8 passer rating in the postseason is the best by any NFL quarterback in playoff history
  • Pro Football Reference noted Mahomes’ 293.8 yards passing per game is an NFL record. So are his 7.32 net yards per attempt.
  • Mahomes also has had seven playoff games with a passer rating of 120.0 or better, which is another NFL record

Mahomes on all-time lists

Future Hall of Famer Tom Brady played until his mid-40s, but Mahomes has said he likely wouldn’t play that long for family reasons.

But it’s reasonable to expect Mahomes will play for another decade and could be among the leaders in multiple career passing statistics. Here is where he stands on the career list going into his 100th start.

Passing yards: 29,083 (60th)

Touchdown passes: 224 (38th)

Passes completed: 2,450 (55th)
