There’s absolutely no doubt that after losing in the Super Bowl, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes will be hungrier than ever to capture the fourth championship of his career.
The 29-year-old has been with the organization since being selected 10th overall in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft, following his college career at Texas Tech. Since then, he has not only won three Super Bowl titles but also earned three Super Bowl MVP awards and has been named NFL MVP twice.
And that’s just a portion of his impressive resume. One thing the Chiefs organization clearly understands is that Mahomes needs strong protection from the offensive line.
That’s exactly what Kansas City prioritized on Day 1 of the NFL draft.
Pete Sweeney broke down the Chiefs’ final pick on Thursday night, a selection that brought good news for Patrick Mahomes.
Kansas City picked offensive tackle Josh Simmons from the Ohio State Buckeyes to close the first round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
Sweeney also shared what head coach Andy Reid thought about Simmons and had this to say: "Josh, we felt was a phenomenal athlete, would have been a higher pick if he hadn't been hurt. Rick Burkholder has done a bunch of work on him, and he's in a great place."
Simmons is a 22-year-old offensive tackle from San Diego. He began his high school career at Madison High School before transferring to Helix High School to finish his prep years. Simmons started his college football journey at San Diego State but transferred after one season.
His second stop was with the Ohio State Buckeyes, where he made a significant impact. Unfortunately, his final season was cut short on October 12, 2024, due to a left knee injury later diagnosed as a torn patellar tendon.
Despite the setback, Simmons was part of a College Football Playoff championship team with the Buckeyes and earned recognition as a third-team All-Big Ten selection.
Simmons gets a chance to play for Reid, who won a Super Bowl as an assistant with the Green Bay Packers and has won three as a head coach with the Chiefs. Reid has been with the Kansas City Chiefs since 2013.
