Chiefs Trade Proposal Swaps Young CB for $72 Million 3-Time All-Pro

Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs are looking to win their fourth Super Bowl since 2019, and they’re currently among the favorites to do just that.

Mitch Milani of Bleacher Report thinks they’re just a player away, and he put together some trade proposals he believes could bring Mahomes and company their fourth ring. One was an interesting player-for-player swap.

Milani has the Chiefs sending cornerback Jaylen Watson and a 2026 fifth-round pick to the Miami Dolphins in exchange for All-Pro corner Jalen Ramsey. Admitting a fifth-rounder was a surprisingly low price to pay for Ramsey, Milani noted that the certainty of the corner’s trade could bring his value down.

Watson is best-known for his performance during the 2022 playoffs, when he made two critical interceptions (one against Trevor Lawrence in the Divisional Round and another on Joe Burrow in the AFC Championship Game), helping propel the Chiefs to Super Bowl 57, which they won.

B/R Thinks a Trade for CB Jalen Ramsey Would Be a Game-Changer for the Kansas City Chiefs

Over the past two seasons in Miami, Ramsey hasn’t been the All-Pro caliber DB he was when he played for the Jaguars and Rams, but he instantly impacted the secondary. He had five pass deflections and three interceptions in just 10 starts in 2023, including a pivotal two-INT game in Week 11 that earned him AFC Defensive Player of the Week honors.

In 2024, he started all 17 games, finishing with 60 total tackles (six for loss), 11 passes defensed, two interceptions and a sack.

“Their corner position is strong,” said Milani about the Chiefs, “but with Ramsey, he can do everything well, and the thing about him is he can be almost interchangeable with Trent McDuffie. He could almost play safety, as well. So just think about the scheme advantage that Jalen Ramsey would provide for the Kansas City Chiefs.”

Noting Kansas City’s issues covering Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver A.J. Brown their Super Bowl 59 loss, Milani thinks Ramsey would eliminate those issues.

“Ramsey could play inside, allowing McDuffie to play outside … you can have so many different match ups where you could man-cover players consistently like they did to beat the 49ers in the Super Bowl a couple years ago. … love the idea of Ramsey playing for a contender again.”

Ramsey is still close enough to a lockdown corner to be a difference-maker. Known for his ability to shadow elite receivers, he’s equally comfortable playing press-man or off-zone and has had both perimeter and slot roles. His championship pedigree—highlighted by a Super Bowl win with the Rams in 2021—and repeated All-Pro selections (2017, 2020, 2021) command respect.

While his interception totals have dipped slightly in recent years—from four INTs in 2022 to only two in 2024—he continues to make his presence felt against opposing WRs. In 2024, he ranked tied for 25th among NFL cornerbacks with 11 pass deflections. Clearly still performing at a Pro Bowl level, he earned his seventh straight selection after his strong 2023 season.

Adding a polished veteran like Ramsey would elevate Steve Spagnuolo’s defense, to be sure. Ramsey’s $72 million contract and $16.6  million cap hit are significant, though, and Kansas City has just under $11 million in cap space. If the Chiefs really wanted to trade for him, they’d need to rework a contract or two.

Watson is a talented young corner, and both youth and affordability are on his side. But there’s no doubt a player like Ramsey would be a good thing for the Chiefs. We’ll see where Ramsey ultimately ends up.
