The Kansas City Chiefs are smarting in a number of ways as they face a blowout in Super Bowl LIX against the Philadelphia Eagles but injury has been added to insult with an injury to defensive star Chris Jones in the second half.
Jones came up injured as the Eagles were threatening to score once again with a 24-0 lead. He came up hobbling with a knee injury on a non-contact play as the Eagles were hoping to score with just six yards to go early in the third quarter.
Steve Spagnuolo leans on Jones as the engine for his defensive game plan every week, so the loss of Jones would be significant for the Chiefs going forward—as if there aren't already some problems.
Jones was already wearing a knee brace, so Chiefs Kingdom will be watching this one with great interest going forward. Jones is just finishing the first season of a five-year contract extension and his health and impact are vital components to the team's overall success.
Elected to his sixth Pro Bowl in 2024, Jones' career trajectory should carry him into the hallowed halls in Canton one day in the Pro Football Hall of Fame. This season he was named a first-team All-Pro with 38 pressures and 5 sacks for the Chiefs' defense.
