Outspoken safety CJ Gardner-Johnson does not usually back down from his more controversial comments, but he did with one remark he made about the Philadelphia Eagles.
In an appearance on “The Pivot” podcast, Gardner-Johnson said he regretted claiming in an Instagram video that the Eagles “probably won’t see a ring without me.” The safety said it was disrespectful to his former Philadelphia teammates.
“It’s a disrespect to Jalen Carter, A.J. Brown — I can name all those guys on that team — Lane Johnson,” Gardner-Johnson said, via Kevin Patra of NFL.com. “Because Lane is my big vet and Lane would tell me, ‘Hey, [C.J.], I got your back, but when you do too much, I don’t got your back. And that’s one of those moments that’s too much.’ Because it’s taken away from his career. He done it. He done it before me. Apologizing to the guys in Philly, I got nothing against them. And if they win six more rings without me, they deserve it, because that’s the type of players they are.”
Gardner-Johnson was not backing down from some of the other comments he made about the Eagles. He even doubled down on some of them, saying that the team was “scared of a competitor.”
The Eagles traded Gardner-Johnson to the Houston Texans during the offseason. The safety started 16 games for the Eagles last season, with 59 total tackles and 6 interceptions in the regular season. The trade was meant as a cost-cutting move, but nobody will actually convince Gardner-Johnson of that.
