The Cleveland Browns have a new quarterback. But it might not be a name you thought it would be.
NFL Network's Ian Rapoport was the first to report on the Browns' trade with the Philadelphia Eagles on Monday afternoon.
"Trade! The #Browns are acquiring QB Kenny Pickett from the #Eagles in exchange for Dorian Thompson-Robinson and a 5th round pick (originally from the #Lions), sources say."
The two teams appear to be swapping project quarterbacks at first glance. Dorian Thompson-Robinson never set himself apart from fellow quarterbacks during his time in Cleveland. And the same could be said of Pickett in Pittsburgh and Philadelphia.
Pickett will at least be able to compete for a starting job in Cleveland. Against who? We have no idea at this point. But a key component of this trade for the Browns could be that fifth-round pick.
For a team that has so many holes up and down the roster, an extra draft pick is a valuable commodity.
In three seasons split between starting and backing up in Pittsburgh and backing up in Philadelphia, Pickett has thrown for 4,765 yards on 755 completions with a 62.4 completion rate. He's added 15 touchdowns and 14 interceptions.
The former Pitt Panther has one year remaining on his current contract for $2,623,350 in 2025 before he'll be a free agent next offseason.
Cleveland most likely isn't done looking for a bona fide starting quarterback.
