Adam Fox has been a star for the Rangers, and while many expected him to be the new captain, it appears as though there's controversy growing around the choice.
Early in the 2024/25 season, the New York Rangers made the shock call to trade captain Jacob Trouba to the Anaheim Ducks, and with the introduction of new Head Coach Mike Sullivan, the expectation was that there would be the naming of a new captain soon.
One player that many have identified as a possible new captain is defenseman Adam Fox, who has been a star for a long time in New York, but in 2024/25 he struggled to be at his best, feeling the heat from the fans and analysts around the team.
However, Sullivan sees Fox as an elite defenseman and has stated in his early interviews with the team that he's excited to get working with a player of Fox's caliber.
Will that lead to him becoming captain however? Many before this past season believed so, but now, the answer isn't quite as clear according to many close to the organization and the team.
There are compelling reasons for the Rangers to name Adam Fox the team captain but leadership is not one of them nor is his recent - lack of - quality on ice play.
That comment comes from The Hockey News, and while it makes sense to make Fox the captain given his dedication to the team and his position within the playing group, but after a poor season in 2024/25, it's safe to say that it's not as straight forward as it once was.
It's unlikely that Artemi Panarin gets the nod as the new captain, and with both Mika Zibanejad and Chris Kreider potentially on the way out, that rules out another two key pieces, so eventually when a captain is named, don't be shocked to see it come down to Fox, Vincent Trocheck and J.T. Miller.
