While Kansas City Chiefs fans and players are still wallowing after the Super Bowl 59 blowout loss, the Philadelphia Eagles fans and players are celebrating their first title since 2018. The Eagles got on the board first with a first quarter touchdown and never looked back, leading 24-0 at halftime and leading by as much as 34-0.
As difficult as it is to admit, the Eagles clearly had the better roster and outplayed the Chiefs in every facet. Even with that being the case, Eagles rookie defensive back Cooper DeJean still wasn't confident that his team was going to be able to come away with the win until the score was 34-0.
While appearing on Up & Adams, DeJean was asked when he felt confident that Philadelphia was going to win the game. As she noted, "No lead is safe" and the Eagles were going up against Patrick Mahomes, one of the all-time greats. DeJean nodded when she mentioned that part and then gave his response.
"I think you started to get that feeling when we went up 34-0," DeJean told Adams and cited the Chiefs/Texans divisional round comeback from 2020 as a reason he wasn't going to get too confident. "It was probably when it got to 34-0 is when you started to get that feeling that, 'Okay this might be it.'"
Cooper DeJean reveals when he felt confident the Eagles were going to beat the Chiefs
Nothing went right for the Chiefs in this game and that was evidenced by the final score. Even if the 40-22 box score seems somewhat respectable, the game was never close and the Chiefs got waxxed from start to finish.
Fans probably felt fine when the Chiefs trailed 10-0 because that's nothing for Mahomes. After DeJean had a pick-six off Mahomes in the second quarter, however, is when it felt like the game was getting away from K.C.
DeJean danced his way into the end zone to make it 17-0 and when Mahomes threw another pick two possessions later, the Eagles' touchdown to make it 24-0 felt like the dagger. Never mind that it wasn't even halftime by that point, the team looked uninspired while the Eagles looked electric.
The fact that DeJean didn't feel comfortable that his team was going to pull off the win even when the team was up big at the half and continued to pour it on when the game resumed in the second half shows the effect that Mahomes has on people. No lead is truly safe when playing him but it would have been more fun had he crawled his way back into this one to really drive that point home.
