She might be best known for her hosting abilities and risqué sense of humour on Dancing With The Stars, but Sonia Kruger thrilled fans in Sunday night’s episode when she showed off her dancing skills with a surprise performance. The Gold Logie winner swapped her microphone for a pair of dancing shoes as she teamed up with the show’s reigning champion Ian Waite to perform a waltz.
She channelled her character Tina Sparkle from the 1992 Baz Luhrmann film Strictly Ballroom, and wore a gold gown with a feathered trim. The performance certainly wasn’t unfamiliar territory for Sonia, as she has been a dancer since the age of four and spent the first few years of her career dancing professionally both in Australia and internationally.
Fans baffled by surprising detail
Viewers took to social media following the “incredible performance” to applaud Ian and Sonia, with many people admitting they couldn’t believe she was about to turn 60.
“Hard to believe it’s 33 years since Sonia played Tina Sparkle in Strictly Ballroom, and that she’s only a few months off turning 60. Impressive,” one person wrote.
“You are kidding me, no way is Sonia that age,” another added, while a third wrote, “Once you have it, you will never lose it”.
'I would love to see more'
Several fans also admitted they would love to see more of Sonia’s dancing on the show, and requested that she perform with former judges Todd McKenney and Paul Mercurio.
“She’s still got it and I would love to see more,” one viewer wrote, followed by another who said, “Great performance, but I'd love to see Sonia & Todd dance together. They did a bit years ago”.
“So good DWTS is showcasing their own pro dancers - show us more of these please Channel 7. Tonight with Sonia’s dance was a highlight,” someone else remarked, with a different user commenting, “And that is how it is done by the professionals… love watching the pros when they dance”.
“Absolutely stunning Sonia, the best waltz ever on Dancing With The Stars,” a fan remarked, while another shared, “That was an outstanding dance by the golden girl!”.
We’re only two episodes into this year’s season of Dancing With The Stars, but Sonia has already made plenty of spicy jokes and jabs at the judges.
Mia Fevola, who is competing with professional dancer Gustavo Viglio, told Yahoo Lifestyle ahead of the premiere that she found Sonia “hilarious” while filming the show earlier this year.,
“Throughout the show, she made so many funny comments, and I absolutely love her. I love her sense of humour, and I think she nails it every time. She’s hilarious,” she shared.
