David Shaw hired as senior personnel executive for Denver Broncos

Former Stanford Cardinal head coach David Shaw has accepted a job as a senior personnel executive with the Denver Broncos this week, the team announced on Thursday. Joining Sean Payton‘s staff is Shaw’s first step back into coaching in the NFL since 2005. The two coaches previously worked together while with the Philadelphia Eagles in 1997.

The Denver Broncos brought the former Cardinal skipper in for an interview in 2023 when they were in the process of replacing Nathaniel Hackett. Unfortunately for Shaw, the team opted to go with the former Super Bowl-winning head coach instead. But now, they’ll combine forces to help the Broncos after posting an 8-9 season in 2023.

During his first stint in the pros, Shaw primarily worked with wide receivers and quarterbacks. That could mean he spends a bit more time this season working with Zach Wilson and Jarrett Stidham, as well as Bo Nix out of Oregon, whom the team selected with the No. 12 overall pick.

Shaw makes foray back into NFL

Shaw worked for the Philadelphia Eagles, Baltimore Ravens and Oakland Raiders from 1997-2005 before joining Jim Harbaugh at the University of San Diego in 2006. He then followed Harbaugh to Stanford in 2006 as his offensive coordinator. He ultimately succeeded him when he went to the NFL. Shaw remained the Cardinal’s head coach through the 2022 season, after which he announced his resignation.

Shaw closed his tenure with Stanford with an overall record of 96-54, including a 65-40 record in Pac-12 play, however, success had been harder to come by later in his tenure. The Cardinal hadn’t won more than four games in a season over his last four years, including a 3-9 season in 2022. Despite going out on a low note, Shaw earned the Pac-12’s Coach of the Year award four times. He also led Stanford to three Pac-12 titles and two Rose Bowl victories in 12 seasons.
