On the latest episode of Whine Down with Jana Kramer, the Love Actually star, 54, opened up to host Jana Kramer about the co-parenting dynamic with ex-husband Charlie Sheen. Richards told the One Tree Hill alum, 41, that she and Sheen parent differently and don't have a friendship.

"Truthfully, it wasn't co-parenting. I parent my way. He parents his way, and there was no co-parenting," she explained. "I have kids with him, and I'm not really — I'm friendly with Charlie, but I wish we were friends and that we could talk all the time and be able to be there really for each other with our girls. But that's just not the relationship we have. Maybe one day. But, I mean right now, there's nothing. There's no discord between he and I, which is great."

"I was always an advocate of wanting everything to be great and be friends and blend the family because he had two boys with his wife after me," she continued. "I just didn't want the girls to feel like they had to choose sides."

"I never talked bad about him in front of the kids, and that's hard to do — to hold your tongue and not say certain things at times," she said. "I don't know if I did a disservice to them with that as well because now that they're older, they're discovering things that they didn't know."

The former couple shares two daughters together. They welcomed their daughter Sami, 21, in 2004, and the following year, they added their daughter Lola, 19, to the family. Richards is also a mom to Eloise, 13, whom she welcomed via adoption in 2011.

"I'm most proud of raising my kids, especially in a time that is very different from how I was raised," Richards told PEOPLE in 2019. "It's extremely hard to keep children grounded. This is not an easy time to grow up."

The proud mom is raising three teenage girls, and noted that they sometimes could be "out of control." During the March 18 episode of Denise Richards & Her Wild Things, the actress met up Kathy Hilton to confide in her about motherhood and the tension between her oldest daughters.

“Sami and Lola are not in a great place, so it's hard,” Richards said. “They could not be more different.”

Reflecting on those ups and downs, Richards said that understanding Kathy’s similar experiences helped her through difficult moments.

“You know I went through a tough time with Sami when she was a teenager where she was out of control,” Richards said. “I told her, ‘I can't have you come and go whenever you want. I can't have it affect your other sisters.’ It was just so hard.”
