The Denver Broncos have quietly focused on fortifying the trenches, understanding that championship aspirations are built from the inside out. Their offensive line is now emerging as a cornerstone as they are blending veteran leadership, youthful talent, and gritty identity to create a powerhouse upfront.
In an article by Nick Kosmider of The Athletic, head coach Sean Payton talks about the offensive line and the impact they have on the offense.
“It’s the one group that permeates your building,” Broncos head coach Sean Payton said last week. “If you’re not good on the offensive line, you don’t know how good you are, then, on the defensive line. It’s the first line of attack, so when that group is playing at a certain level, then very quickly the defensive front has to meet that standard, or it’s not good. So from a football intelligence (perspective), it’s probably one of the most important position groups.”
The Starting Unit
The Broncos’ starting offensive line consists of left tackle Garett Bolles, left guard Ben Powers, right guard Quinn Meinerz, and center Luke Wattenberg. What makes Denver’s line special is how the individuals gel. This isn’t a collection of names it is a cohesive unit. They operate like one organism, communicating blitzes, adjusting protections, and executing combo blocks naturally.
“The building, the roster, everything we’re doing, it’s hard to accomplish when that group is not what it needs to be,” Payton said. “It’s hard to evaluate the quarterback. It’s hard to evaluate the receiver because the quarterback’s having trouble. It’s hard to evaluate the runner. It’s hard to evaluate the coach. It’s extremely important to get that group right.”
“The experience and toughness of that group,” Payton said, “is extremely important.
Meinerz and Bolles are Leaders of the Group
Watch any dominant Broncos run game and you will find Meinerz and Bolles leading the charge pulling across the line to seal the edge or bulldozing straight ahead to create daylight. Both players thrive in both zone and gap schemes, showcasing the agility to reach linebackers at the second level and the strength to displace nose tackles at the point of attack. Meinerz was a first-team all-pro guard in 2024 for the Broncos.
“My passion at a young age was that I just wanted to put everyone in the dirt all the time,” said Bolles, who turned 33 last month. “Now, I think it’s sexier to stay in front of someone and block them with your feet and hands. The reality is, when you look at some of the best tackles in the league, that’s what they did. They stayed in front of the guys. They moved their feet. They played for a long time.”
The Broncos will rely on both players to lead the offensive line again this season as they should be one of the league’s best again. When the offensive line is playing well it allows the offense to be one of the better teams in the league.
