Derek Hough Announces Major Career News Ahead of DWTS Season 34

Derek Hough shared big news with fans four months before the anticipated return of “Dancing with the Stars.”

In May 2025, the ballroom judge announced a new sneaker collaboration with footwear brand Fuego. Hough announced the news on his social media channels and gave more insight into it in an accompanying interview.

Hough is a six-time Mirrorball champion on “Dancing with the Stars.” He made a move to the judges panel on the ABC celebrity ballroom competition in 2020, where he remains alongside veteran judges Bruno Tonioli and Carrie Ann Inaba.

In a post on Instagram, Hough, 39, shared a video of a traditional dance shoe as it transformed into a sleek and stylish sneaker. “INTRODUCING: The Derek Hough x Fuego sneaker collection,” the post was captioned.

The Emmy-winning choreographer noted that while he grew up dancing in “traditional ballroom shoes,” he always wanted something that he could wear all day.

Hough explained that his new sneaker collaboration with Fuego fits the bill with a  “modern edge” to it. Hough also provided a link to his Fuego line, which features split-sole and low-top options at $180.

Fans and celebrity friends commented on the collab announcement.

“Finally a sneaker that’s easy on them knees 🦵🏼🦵🏼 Congrats buddy 🤘🏼,” wrote pal Mark Ballas.

Hough’s wife, Hayley Erbert, commented by posting two fire emoji.

Hough shared further details on the collab in an interview with Footwear News. He told the outlet he was “super hands-on” throughout the process of designing the line that bears his name.

“I wanted the shoes to move with you — not against you — so we focused on lightweight materials, cushioned insoles, and details that allow for both stability and freedom,” he said. “We tested and refined them with movement in mind.”

Hough added that it was a “proud moment” when he saw the completed design. He also confirmed the shoes would be a great fit for “Dancing With the Stars” dancers.

In April, TV Line confirmed that “Dancing With the Stars” will return for its 34th season this fall. In addition to the longtime judges and show host Alfonso Ribeiro and Hough’s sister, Julianne,  the first contestant, wildlife conservationist Robert Irwin, was announced. Irwin is the brother of Hough’s “Dancing With the Stars” season 21 winning partner, Bindi Irwin.
