Tampa Bay Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles kicking a game-tying extra point instead of giving his offense a chance for a go-ahead two-point conversion late in Monday night's game at the Kansas City Chiefs was always going to be somewhat of a controversial decision. It became more so after the Buccaneers lost the coin toss in overtime and Kansas City's Patrick Mahomes drove the hosts down the field for a walk-off touchdown.
Following the defeat that dropped the Buccaneers to 4-5 on the season, quarterback Baker Mayfield spoke with reporters about Bowles' call.
"Against a team with an offense like that, you can only give them so many chances," Mayfield said, as shared by Jenna Laine of ESPN. "They win the coin toss, and that's what happens."
Pockets of New England Patriots fans criticized first-year head coach Jerod Mayo for making a similar decision this past weekend after rookie quarterback Drake Maye produced a highlight-reel touchdown pass on the final play of regulation against the Tennessee Titans. No disrespect meant to the Titans, but they don't have a generational quarterback who has a history of completing game-winning drives on the sport's biggest stages such as Mahomes.
During his postgame news conference, Bowles indicated that the weather impacted his decision to play for overtime rather than for a possible win with 27 seconds remaining in the game's fourth quarter.
"We wanted to get into overtime with the wet conditions on the field," Bowles explained. "We thought we had to go into overtime instead of going for two. We had our shots. We lost the game."
The Buccaneers began the campaign at 3-1 but have since lost four of their last five contests. As of Tuesday morning, DraftKings Sportsbook listed Tampa Bay as a six-point underdog for this coming Sunday's home game against a 4-4 San Francisco 49ers side that is coming off its bye.
"I'm proud of our guys on offense that stepped up," Mayfield added. "Coach had a good message...'We're that close. Don't get used to losing but just turn this thing around. We've got a home game next week against an NFC opponent, and we've got to find a way to win. That's it.'"
