DWTS Alum Delivers Brave Speech at Son’s Wedding

Kevin McEnroe is reflecting on a deeply emotional moment from his recent wedding — when his mother, Tatum O’Neal, stood up and delivered a heartfelt speech, five years after a stroke left her unable to speak or move.

Tatum O'Neal on November 17, 2018 in Hollywood, California.

The 39-year-old writer, whom O’Neal shares with tennis legend John McEnroe, married actress Fern Cozine in Calistoga, California, on June 14. In a personal interview with Vogue, he described the ceremony as a moment of healing and togetherness.

“She Was Brave and Gracious,” Kevin Says

Held in a rustic barn on a scenic ranch, the reception featured heartfelt speeches from family members, including one from O’Neal that left a lasting impression.

“My mother — who suffered a stroke in 2020 that left her temporarily nonverbal and immobile, but who fought her way back with grit and, at times, a kind of abridged elegance — got up and gave a speech,” Kevin told Vogue.

“She thanked my father and stepmother for having her, told a bit of her wild life story, which she can’t seem to help, but also spoke of a future filled with love, hope and joy. She was brave and gracious, and I was proud of her for doing so.”

A Full-Circle Family Moment

Kevin shared that the day felt like a miracle, noting that all branches of his family came together in a way they hadn’t in years.

“My mother, father and stepmother [singer Patty Smyth] were all there, together and in harmony, which hadn’t been the case in many years,” he said. “Both Fern and I come from big, sometimes scattered families, but that day everyone came together.”

A Sober Celebration, Full of Intention

In addition to celebrating love, the couple made sure to celebrate sobriety. After past struggles with addiction, both Kevin and his mom are now sober. Cozine told Vogue that it was essential to ensure all guests felt included with a thoughtful mix of cocktails and mocktails.

“It was paramount to me that we provide equally tasty and elevated options for everyone,” she said. “It is only because of Kevin’s work and commitment to sobriety that he is here today and we were able to get married.”

On July 13, Kevin posted a series of heartfelt wedding photos on Instagram with the caption: “Yours, forever, @ferncozine. Thank you my fam I love you so.” The post included sweet moments with John McEnroe, Kevin’s brother Sean McEnroe, and a touching photo of O’Neal sharing a hug with the bride.

Tatum O’Neal and John McEnroe were married from 1986 to 1992.

They share three children: Kevin, Sean, and Emily McEnroe, 34. Their breakup led to a high-profile custody battle, but the family has since made strides toward reconciliation.
