Dancing With the Stars” pros Val Chmerkovskiy and Jenna Johnson have left Los Angeles due to the wildfires in the area.
“The past 48 hours have been absolutely nuts and wild,” Johnson said on her Instagram Stories on January 9. “Just so heartbreaking on so many levels. We are packed and ready to go in case we need to evacuate. Last night, I thought we were going to,” she continued.
About 10 hours later, Johnson returned to her Instagram Stories to let her followers know that she, Chmerkovskiy, and their son Rome decided to leave Los Angeles.
“We decided to leave L.A. this evening. It just felt too much, too scary. We didn’t have a mandatory evacuate but it didn’t feel right to stay there. And the air quality was so, so bad,” Johnson said. “So, we ended up leaving and we are safe and good,” she added.
Johnson was sitting on the floor wrapping gifts for her son Rome’s birthday. Rome turns 2 on January 10.
Chmerkovskiy and Johnson have been keeping their social media followers in the loop in regard to what’s going on with the wildfires in their area.
According to the Los Angeles Times, looting has become a problem amid the devastating fires. In a post on January 9, Chmerkovskiy talked about seeing cars filled with men circling his neighborhood, which was unsettling. DWTS fans have taken to Reddit to react
“I just saw it. I can’t even imagine how scary the fires alone are but to also have people who are intentionally causing more, is crazy. I’m glad they’re evacuating though,” one person wrote.
“There are several neighborhoods which this is happening. He has children to protect! Good on him to exercise his rights. [Expletive] these looters who want to try and steal thinking people have evacuated and anyone who questions what is happening. If you’re not here, you don’t know how bad it is, period,” someone else said.
“There are really bad people. As soon as ‘rich’ people evacuate, these bums will go in their homes and steal what they can then sell it. Since it will all ‘burn down anyway.’ So messed up,” a third comment read.
Prior to leaving their home, both Chmerkovskiy and Johnson were paying close attention to the location of the fires. Thankfully, the flames hadn’t gotten close to their neighborhood as of January 8.
“Thank you to all our friends reaching out. It was a wild night. The winds tore down a few trees, no power still, but thankfully the fires haven’t touched us yet. We’re staying put but alert and ready,” Chmerkovskiy wrote on his Instagram Stories.
“Wild times. Oh how paradise can very quickly turn into hell with just a gust of wind. This too shall pass. Sending love and thinking of all the courage’s firefighters and first responders doing all they can to protect us all,” he added.
About 24 hours later, he and Johnson decided to evacuate.
Chmerkovskiy’s brother, Maks Chmerkovskiy, and his family live nearby and haven’t evacuated, while “Dancing With the Stars” pro Sasha Farber is also believed to be in the same neighborhood and he left his home and went to a hotel.
