Sometimes Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman hits home runs in the offseason (Saquon Barkley), and sometimes he whiffs badly (Bryce Huff). After righting the wrong of the Huff signing, Roseman has an intriguing opportunity to find his replacement with a future Hall of Famer.
CBS Sports writer John Breech shared a list of four teams that would be ideal landing spots for edge rusher Von Miller. The Eagles were named as a potential new home for the eight-time Pro Bowl defender.
"The Eagles defensive line got hit hard in free agency with the losses of Josh Sweat and Milton Williams. Sweat was a strong pass-rusher who led the team in sacks in 2024 with 8.5 while Williams ranked third on the team with five sacks. The Eagles don't need Miller to start, they just need him to rush the passer in key spots, which would essentially be the perfect role for him at this point in his career. Also, with 15 years of experience under his belt, he'd be a solid veteran presence for Philadelphia's younger players. Eagles general manager Howie Roseman is always looking to improve his team in the trenches, so adding Miller on a cheap, one-year deal certainly wouldn't be out of character for him."
Losing Sweat and Williams were inevitable as they were going to get higher salaries elsewhere. Brandon Graham's retirement was tough as the Eagles lost a true veteran leader in the locker room.
Trading away Huff was necessary after the team overpaid for him last offseason and had to get something out of him. The San Francisco 49ers assisted the Eagles by absorbing some of the costs and providing them with a mid-round pick in the process.
A great way to move away from Huff is to bring in a 36-year-old pass rusher who can still play at a high level. Miller has played the last three seasons with the Buffalo Bills, primarily as a third-down pass rusher, accumulating eight sacks in 2022 and six last year.
The last time Miller was in the Pro Bowl was in 2019 and hasn't quite been himself lately, but he's still gotten at least five sacks in all by one season since 2021.
What can Miller do to help the Eagles? Honestly, the exact same thing he did in Buffalo. Philly can roll with Nolan Smith Jr. and Jalyx Hunt on first and second down, and then replace Hunt with Miller on third down. Miller doesn't have the energy to work all three downs anymore, but he can still get pressure on the quarterback.
Miller can serve as a great mentor to guys like Smith and Hunt, who are still learning the edge rusher position. The man is going to be a Hall of Famer, so it would be like having another coach on the field to learn his tricks.
The other obvious connection? Eagles defensive coordinator Vic Fangio was Miller's head coach while they both were in Denver. Miller fits Fangio's defense perfectly and can help the young defense.
This wouldn't be an expensive deal for Roseman and the Eagles. Not nearly as much as it cost them to bring in Huff, who did very little the previous season.
It's worth exploring whether the Eagles should consider Miller for one more year. He could help a youthful defense set up the franchise for success in the future.
