Over the last five years, Philadelphia Eagles general manager Howie Roseman has rarely missed on his draft picks. One in particular, though, has not been to the Eagles standard.
Last season was just his rookie year, but sixth-round wide receiver Johnny Wilson struggled when he played. Wilson was targeted just 15 times, but he only had five receptions for 38 yards and one touchdown.
His monstrous six foot six inch height was going to make him an intriguing prospect entering the NFL, but his drops and lack of consistency has his career off on the wrong foot. Now entering 2025 training camp, Wilson will be fighting for a spot on the 53-man roster with one receiver emerging from offseason workouts.
Gray brings an interesting element to the offense as his 4.33 40-yard speed can give the Eagles another deep threat in the slot. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are the top receivers, with Jahan Dotson pretty much locked in at number three, but Gray could sneak in against Wilson, Terrace Marshall Jr., and Ainias Smith.
Throughout the offseason workouts, Gray was the one receiver who stood out as a great performer. Philadelphia is looking for another wide receiver outside of Brown and DeVonta Smith to step up.
Wilson could find himself on the hot seat entering training camp with Gray coming into the fold. Marshall is more of a veteran, but it doesn't guarantee him a roster spot. Ainias Smith didn't get a lot of playing time like Wilson, but appeared to be more consistent with his opportunities.
Training camp has some intriguing position battles for the Eagles, but the wide receiver one isn't being talked about nearly as often. There are three, possibly four receivers fighting to be near the top of the depth chart. The most significant question mark at receiver is Wilson, who could make him the odd man out if Gray continues his success.
