The Philadelphia Eagles may have the best running back in football, and perhaps more importantly, the presumed #1 overall pick in fantasy football drafts later this summer, in reigning Offensive Player of the Year, Saquon Barkley.
But they do not have much going on behind him at the position, with AJ Dillon and Will Shipley primed as his two backups heading into training camp. Dillon is coming off a season-ending neck injury in the 2024 offseason that saw him sit out the entire season, whilst Shipley is a fourth round rookie who has never played a snap in the NFL.
Dillon made a positive impact over the course of his five years in Green Bay, but his production in both the running and passing game declined over the course of his subsequent seasons post Year 2, despite spending substantial periods of 2023 as the clear starter, as Aaron Jones battled injury in the regular season.
And Shipley, of course, is very much an unknown product.
Thus, the Eagles could look to make some additions to shore up their backfield and give themselves a reliable #2 option, in case things go south and the team has to play significant amounts of time without Barkley.
One strong option would be to look at an in-division rival trade with the New York Giants and make a play for running back, Devin Singletary.
Since being supplanted as New York’s RB1 by 2024 fifth round pick, Tyrone Tracy Jr., Singletary is not exactly right on the trade block, but he is probably up for grabs for the right price.
The Giants would save $5 million in 2025 cap space by trading Singletary, per Spotrac. And for a team that is still trying to keep its head above water in an increasingly competitive NFC East division, that could be a valuable save for a second stringer.
Indeed, it is quite possible that Singletary may not even be the #2 back for the Giants after training camp, with fourth round rookie and college football sensation, Cam Skattebo impressing at minicamp this spring.
The Eagles, on the other hand, will likely feel less prone to fielding risk at the position, considering their proximity to another championship run. So a trade could make sense for both teams.
There is certainly precedent for intra-division trades, particularly within the NFC East. Whereas some franchises – like the Packers and the Bears – essentially refuse to do business with one another, the Eagles have always been willing to deal with their metaphorical “neighbors”.
Just last offseason, Philadelphia traded a third round pick to the Washington Commanders in exchange for former first round pick, Jahan Dotson. As a result, t is not out of the question that the Eagles could figure out a way to make a deal with New York, especially for a non-star player like Singletary.
Philadelphia Eagles receive: Devin Singletary.
New York Giants receive: 2026 sixth round pick.
