Eagles' offense being slept on after incredibly low ranking among the top 10

After winning a Super Bowl, it's not uncommon for the defending champions to be questioned about whether they can repeat as champions. The doubters of the Philadelphia Eagles have seemed to be higher than usual this offseason, though.

Eagles' offense being slept on after incredibly low ranking among the top 10

Both the offense and defense in Philadelphia have faced questions from the media. On offense, it revolves around running back Saquon Barkley's touches and new offensive coordinator Kevin Patullo. Defensively, the question is whether the young players can step up to replace all the departed players.

These are fair questions, but at the same time, this Eagles team is not that much different from the one that made the Super Bowl title run in 2024. So why so many questions? One ranking looked at offenses in the NFL, with one again, the Eagles not getting the respect they deserve.

Eagles ranked near the bottom of NFL.com's offensive rankings in 2025

NFL.com deputy editor, written content, Gennaro Filice, ranked his top 10 offenses in the NFL entering the 2025 season. The Eagles only got to seven with Filice even acknowledging that they could be higher.

"This could be too low for the reigning Super Bowl champs, who feature the best offensive line in football, a 2,000-yard rusher and one of the top receiving duos in the game today. But I’m still not entirely sure what to think of Jalen Hurts. Not that he’sbad, obviously. The guy just won Super Bowl MVP, for god’s sake, and probably deserved that same honor in the Super Bowl that Philadelphia lost three Februarys ago. Hurts is certifiably GOOD -- but how good is he? Last season, including the playoffs, he eclipsed 300 yards passing in only one game. And while he provides undeniable value as a runner -- particularly with his forward thrust on the “Tush Push” -- Hurts doesn’t really take over games with his legs. All in all, the past two seasons just haven’t matched the individual output he produced under Shane Steichen in his MVP runner-up campaign of 2022. In related news, he now has his third new offensive coordinator in as many years, with former passing game coordinator Kevin Patullo promoted to the post after Kellen Moore took the top job in New Orleans. Heading into his fifth season as the full-time starter, the soon-to-be 27-year-old certainly could take a significant step forward. If he does, the offense will follow suit, and I'll look stupid."

Last year, the Eagles' offense ranked eighth in total offense, averaging 367.2 yards per game. The strength of the unit came in the running game as Philadelphia was second behind the Baltimore Ravens with 179.3 yards per game. The Eagles were also seventh in scoring offense, averaging 27.2 yards per game.

The big difference between the Eagles' offense and defense is that the offense is going through way fewer turnover on the roster. 10 of the 11 starters from last year's offense is back with right guard being the only position needing to be replaced and that appears to be going to Tyler Steen for the moment.

Patullo taking over as play caller is the biggest question heading into the season, as he has not held that role in his career. What's important to note, though, is that he has played a massive role in game planning for the offense, so he knows what he's doing. He may need time to learn the game's flow. This isn't a Brian Johnson situation.

Philadelphia still boasts two of the best wide receiver duos in the NFL, featuring A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith. Since the two have paired together in 2022, both guys have had at least 800 receiving yards each, with Smith eclipsing 1,000 yards in each of his three seasons in the midnight green uniforms.

The media can't forget that Saquon Barkley had 2,504 yards rushing between the regular season and postseason, an NFL record. It helps that Barkley has the best offensive line in the NFL in front of him with Jordan Mailata, Landon Dickerson, Cam Jurgens, and Lane Johnson opening up lanes for him.

Quarterback Jalen Hurts is a key piece to this offense, and no, not just because he can execute the Tush Push efficiently. Hurts means so much more to this offense with his accuracy and the way he avoids bad turnovers. His calming demeanor as the leader makes him the perfect franchise quarterback for this team.

The hope in 2025 will be this offense will be able to do more in the passing game and not lean so much on Barkley, but the weapons are there to make it happen. A seventh ranking is a bit disrespectful for what is the most loaded offense in the NFL.
