Eagles' Vic Fangio gets real about the midseason NFL trade deadline

The NFL trade deadline is right around the corner and while several teams have done something to bolster their roster, the Philadelphia Eagles have not made a move just yet.

And defensive coordinator Vic Fangio doesn't believe there's any reason to.

When asked this week by reporters if he is pushing for a trade at any position, Fangio was very blunt in his response.

Eagles' Vic Fangio gets real about the midseason NFL trade deadline

 "No," Fangio said.

Fangio went on to say that a midseason trade isn't going to make a big impact on their team unless you're investing in younger talent.

"Yeah, I mean, it’s hard to improve your team drastically this time of year," Fangio said. "I think if you look at some of those trades over the years, they really haven’t had the effect some teams were hoping for. ... Unless it’s a trade where you’re getting a guy that you’re going to have for a few years so it’s more of a bigger trade than swapping guys, trading a sixth for a seventh, those type things."

Fangio makes a solid point after the Eagles' midseason trade with the Tennessee Titans for 30-year-old Kevin Byard last fall was a bust.

The Eagles sent them a 2024 fifth and sixth-round pick in exchange for the veteran safety. There were high expectations for the former All-Pro in Philly, however, he failed to meet them and finished the 2023 season with 75 tackles, one interception, and three passes defended through 10 games with the Birds.

The Eagles went on to release him in March, saving the team $13 million in cap space ahead of NFL free agency.

Just because Fangio doesn't think there is a dire need for additional talent in Philly, don't count the Birds out just yet since general manager Howie Roseman is always making and taking phone calls.
