Travis Kelce of the Kansas City Chiefs reacts prior to the AFC Championship Game against the Buffalo Bills.
Happy Gilmore is Shooter McGavin’s foil on the golf course. You can add Travis Kelce and the Kansas Chiefs to the list in real life.
Christopher McDonald, the actor who plays McGavin — the famous Gilmore’s villain in the hit 1996 comedy that has a sequel premiering on Netflix starting July 24 — is a die-hard Buffalo Bills fan.
McDonald confessed to Heavy Sports in an exclusive interview during the launch of his partnership with Subway that he “hated” Kelce, his “Happy Gilmore 2” co-star.
“I told him, I hate him. I hated him,” McDonald said in jest. “He’s too damn good. And we’ll get him. We’ll get him one of these days because buckle up, the Bills are right there to get that final hill to go over.”
Movi Inc. Christopher McDonald, who plays the role of “Shooter McGavin” in the “Happy Gilmore 2” says he “hates” Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce.
Kelce and the Chiefs have the Bills’ number since 2020. They have beaten the Bills twice in the AFC divisional round and twice in the AFC championship games during that span.
Kelce has had 36 catches for 448 yards and has scored four touchdowns in eight games against the Bills in his career. In the last AFC championship between the two bitter rivals, Kelce finished with two catches for 19 yards, but received a $11,255 fine for taunting incident during the match.
“So, I’m a little bit angry about that, but he was a good sport about it,” McDonald told Heavy Sports. “Plus, I’m a fan of him. He’s good.”
A ‘Dream Come True’ For Travis Kelce
Kelce is one of the few athletes who is making a cameo appearance in what is expected to be another blockbuster from Adam Sandler.
McDonald said the Chiefs tight end was “surprisingly a good actor.”
In January, Kelce said on “The Pat McAfee Show” that working with Sandler on Happy Gilmore 2 was “a dream come true.”
“I’ll tell you what, that was a dream come true. I thought SNL (Saturday Night Live) was going to be the peak of my acting and showman or entertainment career,” Kelce told McAfee. “Working with Happy Gilmore himself, the Sandman and Happy Productions, it was off the chain.”
The “Happy Gilmore 2” is Kelce’s movie debut after appearing on a couple of TV series “Grotesquerie” and “Moonbase 8.”
“They’re so professional and yet so fun to work with, I felt like I was working with the [Chiefs coach] Andy Reid of the acting world, man,” Kelce added. “[Sandler] is every bit as cool off the screen as he is on the screen and that was a dream come true. That was awesome. I’m in, I believe, a few scenes. I got a pretty hefty load in there.”
Shooter McGavin Stars in Subway ‘Happy Gilmore’ Ads
Subway is also returning to the Happy Gilmore sequel. Sandler famously drove a Subway All-American sandwich in the 1996 movie. They are bringing back the Happy Gilmore Meal, this time with McDonald starring in their commercials.
“Well, Subway has gone above and beyond,” McDonald told Heavy Sports. “This time, they have great three different treats for the fans. They have the subwayhappyplace.com, where you can sign up and get to win great prizes and stuff. There’s also what they call the MVP rewards, where you can get more perks inside ‘Subway’s Happy Place’ like bonus entries into a weekly sweepstakes for a chance to win more than $1 million in prizes, including a custom golf cart, weekly cash prizes (delivered as Big Ass Checks like in the movie), and a golf resort trip for two.”

On top of that, Subway is also giving away some instant win prizes like Subway Cash and Topgolf play codes. Fans can also collect four collectible cups with different fan-favorite character from the movie franchise: Happy Gilmore, Shooter McGavin, Hal and a newcomer – Oscar each time they upgrade for any combo or Meal of the Day to the Happy Gilmore Meal for $1 more starting July 10.
