Floyd Mayweather Has No Doubt Who Is More Skillful Between Gervonta Davis And Shakur Stevenson

Gervonta Explains Why the Fight with Shakur Stevenson Didn't Happen - Ready To Fight

Both men have had similarly successful careers, each rising up the divisions and becoming three-weight world champions.

Stevenson won the WBO featherweight title and then moved up and became the unified WBO and WBC super-featherweight champion, before turning his attention to 135lbs.

He won the WBC lightweight title in November 2023, and has since made two defences of that belt, the latest coming in February when he stopped Josh Padley in the ninth round.

It’s much the same for Davis, who first claimed world honours when he won the IBF super-featherweight title in 2017, before later adding the WBA strap at 130lbs.

He headed up to lightweight and won the WBA title in 2019, remaining champion in that division ever since, though he did have one fight at 140lbs in 2021 where he stopped Mario Barrios to win the WBA super-lightweight title.

One mine that was by the side of ‘Tank’ for a number of those world title fights was boxing legend Floyd Mayweather, who guided the career of Davis for several years.

While they may no longer work together, Mayweather still keeps a keen eye on the career of Davis, and gave his take on how his former protégé compares to Stevenson.

“As of right now the biggest puncher at 135 is Gervonta Davis, but the most skilful fighter at 135 would be hands down Shakur Stevenson.

“It’s really all about skills. Pernell Whittaker wasn’t a huge puncher but he was very exciting, very tough and he fought everybody. Shakur is trying to do the same thing.”

Boxing fans will hope a fight between Stevenson and Davis could happen soon, but Stevenson recently named the other fighter he’d be willing to face which could directly affect ‘Tank.’
