Former breakout star possibly on the outs with Raiders

Zamir White - Las Vegas Raiders Running Back - ESPN

This time one year ago, Zamir White was considered as the next great running back of the Las Vegas Raiders.

A strong finish to the 2023 season from White prompted the Raiders to allow Josh Jacobs to walk in free agency, effectively handing the reins to the 2022 fourth-round pick. However, White struggled to develop any traction, losing snaps to the likes of Alexander Mattison, Ameer Abdullah and Sincere McCormick due to injury and ineffectiveness. It was an extremely disappointing development for the Raiders, leading to the team having the worst rushing offense in the league last season.

As a result, White finds himself in a much different situation this time around.

White finds himself squarely on the roster bubble as a result of the Raiders’ offseason moves.

According to Bleacher Report’s Kristopher Knox, White could be a high-profile player that the Raiders choose to leave off of their 53-man roster.

“The Raiders looked like they may have a future starter in 2022 fourth-round pick Zamir White late in the 2023 season. In four starts to end that year, he tallied 397 combined rushing yards,” wrote Knox.

“However, White struggled last season before landing on injured reserve with a quad injury. With rookie first-round pick Ashton Jeanty set to handle an every-down role—and free-agent addition Raheem Mostert behind him—White could be on the way out.”

With Jeanty and Mostert the presumed top two on the depth chart, White now has to compete for snaps elsewhere.

McCormick looked promising in limited action last season, so he has a real argument to earn a roster spot. That would leave White competing with 2024 sixth-round pick Dylan Laube for a roster spot as the fourth running back. While White could edge out Laube due to the latter’s ball security issues, Laube offers more receiving and special teams upside than White.

With a new regime leading the way, White will have to prove himself all over again to earn another chance with the Raiders.
