Former Vikings QB Predicted To Win Starting Role In A “Landslide”

Daniel Jones did not exactly become a Minnesota Vikings legend during his short stint in Minneapolis, playing not even one snap for the franchise.

However, this did not deter the Vikings from wanting to keep the former Giant longer term, as Albert Breer reported back in March that the franchise made an offer that was “right in that neighborhood on a one-year deal.”

But for his part, Jones may end up taking a chance on himself in choosing Indianapolis, as Bleacher Report’s Moe Moton wrote on Friday that he believes that he former Duke product will win the starting quarterback job by a “wide margin”.

Daniel Jones Predicted To Be Out Anthony Richardson For Colts QB Role

“In a bit of an upset, Daniel Jones will unseat incumbent starting quarterback Anthony Richardson Sr. for the lead position.” Moton predicted last week, “This offseason, the Indianapolis Colts signed Jones, who had a short stint on the Minnesota Vikings’ practice squad and active roster after the New York Giants released him in November of last year. The seventh-year pro can turn this opportunity into a career rebirth.”

Moton points to Jones upwards expected arrow coming from his improved offensive situation under new head coach, Shane Steichen.

“Jones will have a stronger supporting cast in Indianapolis than he had with the Giants in recent years.

The Colts can go four deep at wide receiver with Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, Alec Pierce and Adonai Mitchell. They added rookie tight end Tyler Warren to a well-rounded pass-catching group. All-Pro running back Jonathan Taylor can handle a massive workload on the ground….Jones wins this battle in a landslide.”

How Good A Position Is Jones In Ahead Of Training Camp?

Daniel Jones is currently a small favorite to win the starting job in Indy, at odds that amount to almost 50/50 split, with Jones having around a 51% chance of winning it to incumbent starter and former fourth overall pick, Anthony Richardson‘s 49%.

Richardson showed some small sparks of impressive play in his rookie year in 2023, before going down with a season-ending injury a month in. Sadly, he was not able to kick on in his sophomore season, where he posted the worst completion percentage of any quarterback in the NFL.

Had the Colts been in position to take an elite QB prospect in the 2025 NFL Draft, it is very possible they would have pulled the trigger. As it stands, they bought in Jones in the offseason to push Richardson, and perhaps take his job.

Jones has not exactly been the epitome of consistency and brilliance of the course of his six year stint in the pros, but he has shown ability at times, like during the Giants’ short playoff run at the end of the 2022 season.

If Richardson is not able to show progress – or indeed recover fully in time from his shoulder injury that kept him out of minicamp last month – Jones may well be the Week 1 starter.
