The Green Bay Packers went into last season with a slew of young wide receivers. They must not have been impressed. After selecting a wide receiver in the first round for the first time since 2002, many thought they would be done adding to the room. After all, they signed Mecole Hardman in the offseason to a one-year deal. GM Brian Gutekunst decided he could add more talent. In the third round, the team selected TCU wide receiver Savion Williams.
Green Bay Packers Select WR Savion Williams
Savion Williams is an electric athlete. Despite being almost 6-foot-5, he has an insane combination of speed and power. The Green Bay Packers have prioritized speed in the past few drafts, and this is another example of that. It isn’t all about the speed. He showcased his dual-threat ability last year for the Horned Frogs. Williams caught 60 passes for 611 yards and six touchdowns while also rushing for 322 yards and another six touchdowns. This is what the Matt LaFleur offense is all about, so he fits perfectly.
This might spell the end of Christian Watson in Green Bay. Savion Williams is a very similar player to Watson: tall, athletic, and fast. Watson has shown flashes but has struggled with injuries and drops in critical moments. He will be out most of the year with an ACL injury, and he is due for a new contract. The Green Bay Packers might have decided to find a younger replacement instead of paying a veteran.
Final Thoughts
If you had told me the Packers took two wide receivers in the first three rounds, I would not have believed it. However, this shows the team is committed to getting Jordan Love more weapons. They believe in the offense and want to make sure they can keep up with the elite teams in the NFC. Who will make the cut in the wide receiver room in 2025?
