Green Bay Packers Sign Undrafted Free Agent To Fully Guaranteed Deal

The Green Bay Packers are trying to find value in the undrafted free agent market. Every year, it seems like one or two players go undrafted and end up starting. The challenge is finding and convincing those players to come to your franchise. Green Bay has signed many undrafted free agents, but on Friday, made it clear they like one specific player. The team signed cornerback Johnathan Baldwin to a fully guaranteed deal.

Green Bay Packers Sign Undrafted Free Agent To Fully Guaranteed Deal

Green Bay Packers Sign CB Johnathan Baldwin

ESPN’s Rob Demovsky posted on social media the entire Green Bay Packers undrafted free agent class, but gave special attention to Johnathan Baldwin. The Packers gave him $115,000 fully guaranteed. While this is not unheard of in the NFL, it isn’t something Green Bay usually does. Some teams will spend up to $300,000 in order to get the player they want out of the undrafted class. Why did they give him such a large contract?

There are two reasons that Demovsky points out. The first is that the Green Bay Packers could have been in a bidding war with other teams and decided that giving a fully guaranteed deal was worth it. The second is that they really like the player and wanted to make sure he signed with them. Whatever the reason, the former UNLV slot cornerback will compete for a spot in the secondary.

Secondary Questions

The biggest question mark of the offseason for the Green Bay Packers is Jaire Alexander. Rumors have swirled for months that the team is trying to trade the former All-Pro cornerback, but so far, a deal has not materialized. It seems the team is ready to move off the expensive contract, but that, coupled with his injury history, is making it difficult to move him. If Alexander leaves, the team is left with Keisean Nixon, Nate Hobbs, and Carrington Valentine. That means there is plenty of opportunity for players like Baldwin.

Many were surprised when the Packers waited all the way until the seventh round to grab a rookie for the secondary. However, the team has preached all offseason that they are happy with the group they have, and maybe they also liked the potential steals they could get in the undrafted class.

Final Thoughts

The Green Bay Packers defense took a huge step forward last season, and the hope is they can take another step forward in 2025. A dominant defense would be a huge help to Jordan Love and the young offense. Baldwin is a player to watch in training camp for this team.
