After the Green Bay Packers drafted Jordan Love in 2020, the front office's relationship with veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers was never the same. Endless renegotiations, a trade request, contract adjustments, and ultimately a trade to the New York Jets.
But Rodgers knew how to compartmentalize. It wasn't Love's fault after all, and Rodgers suffered in a similar situation with Brett Favre almost two decades earlier.
In an interview with Jason Wilde during an autograph session, Love talked about his relationship with Rodgers after the veteran signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers.
"I appreciate definitely the way A-Rod handled being in that situation, and I think a big part of it — which he told me — was he knew how it was for him being in that same position, and the things that he went through and the way the situation might’ve been handled [differently],” Love explained. “I think his perspective was, ‘I’m trying to go about this a little bit differently,’ which I think was awesome."
That openness from Aaron Rodgers allowed them to have a closer connection, and Jordan Love took advantage of it to learn more during his three years as a backup quarterback.
“In my time with A-Rod, we had a great relationship. It was awesome being in the same room with him, being able to learn", Love added. "He was amazing with everything. And I definitely appreciate the way he handled everything on the outside with obviously him leaving and me taking over, and he’s been very supportive of me."
When the Packers transitioned from Brett Favre to Aaron Rodgers in 2008, several fans were resistant to the change. In 2023, it was a much smoother process. First, because the organization had a track record of making a similar move, but also because Rodgers himself handled the situation more naturally than Favre did.
“It definitely helped with some of the negativity that might’ve come with that," Love detailed. "But A-Rod handled it like a pro and did very right by me.”
This upcoming season, for the first time ever, Rodgers will face Jordan Love and the Packers. The game in Pittsburgh will be a Sunday Night Football matchup in Week 8.
